IIS-re.green partnership to restore at least 1 million hectares of forests
re.green is a large-scale tropical forest restoration company founded and co-chaired by Bernardo Strassburg – the president of IIS. The organization brings together scientists with more than 30 years of experience in ecological restoration, and respected investors with the aim of restoring at least 1 million hectares in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest, contributing to the climate change mitigation and the biodiversity conservation. With the forecast of capturing 15 million tons of CO2 per year after forest recovery, the initiative foresees to monetize through the commercialization of premium carbon credits, in addition to certified wood and non-wood products from ecological restoration.
IIS will support re.green in the development of innovative solutions that enable re.green’s success and contribute to a better understanding of the benefits of restoration in tropical forests, both in social and environmental aspects. Currently, there are knowledge gaps and a need for spatial information at the level of rural properties. In particular, there is a need to better understand how to measure the benefits to biodiversity and ecosystems at this scale, in addition to incorporating the effects of climate change on species and ecosystems. Likewise, it is essential to understand (or predict) how, in climate change scenarios, tree growth, wood accumulation and carbon stock will occur, contributing to the development of 5-star ecological restoration.
