IIS representatives present results at the World Biodiversity Forum (WBF) 2024

On the third day of the 2024 World Biodiversity Forum (WBF), Rafael Loyola and Juliana Rocha delivered presentations on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and the PLANGEA Web platform. The event explored how to use science to drive actions and solutions for biodiversity conservation and sustainability transformation.

NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR NATURAL DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT

Juliana, our technical-scientific manager, outlined the work done in the project “Framework to guide the mitigation of natural disasters through Nature-based Solutions“, in partnership with the Swiss Re Foundation. She presented the operational framework developed for natural disaster risk management.

PLANGEA WEB: DECISION SUPPORT PLATFORM FOR ECOSYSTEM CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION

Meanwhile, Rafael, our executive director, introduced PLANGEA Web, a platform developed by IIS to facilitate and support strategic land-use planning across different goals and objectives. The platform is continually evolving to enhance its multi-criteria optimization and identify priority areas for ecosystem conservation and restoration. Its approach reveals synergies and trade-offs between biodiversity and climate, integrating them into economic efficiencies for planning and policy choices.

WBF 2024 took place from June 16 to 21 in Davos, Switzerland, under the theme “From Science to Action.” The third WBF brought together researchers from diverse biodiversity science disciplines with practitioners and social actors to respond to the call for urgent, transformative actions to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

The forum connected diverse knowledge sources, identified opportunities, synergies, and trade-offs to guide policies and actions. Moreover, it developed narratives, pathways, and visions for sustainable futures, highlighting routes to achieve change.
