Experiments with biochar begin in Casimiro de Abreu/RJ
The International Institute for Sustainability started on December 11th the experiments with biochar with rural producers in Casimiro de Abreu/RJ. This project is a partnership between and the Golden Lion Tamarin Association (AMLD, in Portuguese).
IIS team visited the seedlings nurseries of Mrs. Graça and Mr. Antônio to begin experiments with soil with different biochar percentages and observe the growth in many native species, which will reforest part of the Atlantic Rainforest. At the seedlings nursery of Mrs. Graça, the experiments involved seeds of Guanandi (or Trema) and Jequitibá Rosa, while at Mr. Antônio property will be analysed the interaction of biochar soil with seeds of Pau Cigarra and Aroeira.
All biochar was obtained with previous experiments of IIS at Fazendinha Agroecológica, in Seropédica/RJ, through a partnership of IIS with Embrapa Agrobiologia. The next steps of this project involves the growth analysis of the seeds during six months, and the direct planting in fields selected by AMLD to the Atlantic Rainforest in Casimiro de Abreu.
