Developing sustainable solutions for urban areas

To meet the initiatives already implemented and map solutions to the problems faced by other cities are the main objectives of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Brazil (SDSN Brazil). The International Institute for Sustainability is a member of the network and attended the first work meeting, held on May 15th, at Instituto Pereira Passos (IPP) headquarters, in Rio de Janeiro.

Launched in 2012 by Ban Ki -Moon, United Nations Secretary-General, the network is set up in more than ten countries, and will address in Brazil the theme “Sustainable Cities: Inclusive, and Resilient Connected “, in order to identify practical solutions to improve urban management. Inititally, the activities will be divided into three thematic groups: Metrics; Adaptation and Resilience; and Connectivity.

According to Emma Torres, from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the proposal of SDSN Brazil is to be a “to-do tank”, focused on the implementation of the ideas. After the presentation of the thematic groups, the participants were divided in groups to suggest the next steps, and also understand the solutions developed by the coordinating institutions of SDSN Brazil – Conservation International, IPP, UFRJ and UFRRJ.
